Solid waste can be classified into four types: Municipal Waste, Industrial Waste, Biomedical Waste, and Agricultural Waste. Municipal Waste consists of household things, construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue and waste from the street. This garbage is mainly generated from residential and commercial complexes. With rising urbanization and changing life styles, the amount of municipal waste has been increasing rapidly and its composition changing. Industrial Waste is generated by metal, chemical, paper, pesticide, refining, and rubber industries. This waste can be that of unwanted machine parts, unwanted chemicals, etc. It is hazardous in many ways.

Biomedical Waste is generally hospital waste. It consists of disposables, anatomical waste, discarded medicines, bandages, swabs, human excreta, etc. This waste is highly infectious and can be a serious threat to human health, if it is not managed in a scientific manner. It has been roughly estimated that of the four kilogram of waste generated in a hospital, at least one kilogram would be infectious. Agricultural Waste, generated by farms, can be crop residue, dead plants and animals, manure, etc. It is generally biodegradable.
